1Motivational Interviewing in Pediatric Practice
Aida Miles, MMSc, RD, CSP, LD, CNSD
It is amazing how much my practice has changed since I was trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI). My interaction with families of overweight children formerly consisted of taking a quick diet history, pointing out the things that needed to change in the diet, recommending a type of physical activity, and giving them a booklet (about 15 pages long). Few people came back for follow-up appointments. I tried to tell myself that it was because I “equipped them” with all the tools they needed to be successful; however, deep inside, I knew that most people could not follow all the recommendations I had given them.
