Ohio Neonatal
Nutritionists' Mentorship Program Members of the Ohio
Neonatal Nutritionists currently offer a mentorship program at
various hospital sites in Ohio and Michigan. This program is an
educational and clinical training opportunity designed for
Dietitians new to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The mentorship
experience varies among institutions but incorporates many of the
following experiences.
- needs assessment
- creation of an action plan to develop the role of the neonatal
nutritionist
- identification of the various role aspects of the neonatal
nutritionist and creation of a unit based nutrition plan of care
- participation in rounds
- development of competency in management of parenteral and
enteral nutrition including writing TPN and special formulas
- didactic clinical experience designed to provide practical
management of NICU babies.
Prior to starting the mentorship experience, mandatory reading in
Neonatal Nutrition is required. Mentorees have a choice of visiting
an existing unit or having a mentor visit them depending on
preference and availability. The length of the mentorship experience
varies and is flexible. Focus on collaborating with various members
of the medical team is a key part of the experience. An in depth
summary is created at the end of the experience outlining needs,
goals, an action plan with time lines and suggested areas for future
work. The cost varies slightly from institution to institution, but
generally includes a fee per hour for service, travel and
accommodations for either the mentoree or mentor. A resource binder
is also available, which includes a variety of tools and resources
for nutritional care in the NICU. An option in neonatal nutrition
education, this experience can work well as a precursor to more
extensive practicum requiring some NICU experience prior to
participation. For more information on this experience, please
